My reverts

[edit]

I have been asked to state why I keep reverting the user who keeps insisting that ""NBC holiday album" should be listed instead of simply "single". The reason for this is that there is no reason to believe that this song was written for this NBC album. Also because it was released as a single[1][2] and if anything it will be included on their next album "Let Love In" and should be listed under that instead. Hope this helps --T-rex 03:26, 5 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. That's all I needed to know. --† Ðy§ep§ion † 03:44, 5 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The release date of "Let Love In" was adjusted to reflect new information from the band's official web site, www.googoodolls.com. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.230.97.70 (talkcontribs) 20:00, 24 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Just so you know, on the iTunes Originials, Johnny explicitly states that he was asked to write a song fo the NBC album and that is when he wrote "Better Days". So there is reason to believe it was written for the album, Johnny said so. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.112.159.88 (talkcontribs) 06:14, 4 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Naming

[edit]

The official name of the band is The Goo Goo Dolls, not Goo Goo Dolls. Shouldn't this article be named accordingly? Cparker 03:35, 28 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Probably --T-rex 04:50, 2 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
You're right, I'm moving it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Akrabbim (talkcontribs) 13:52, 3 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The offical name of the band is actually "Goo Goo Dolls." 'The' is just added to make it sound more gramatically correct. Their website is www.googoodolls.com, their artist name is listed on iTunes Music Store as Goo Goo Dolls, and not only that, but VH1 lists them as "Goo Goo Dolls." Also, if you look at their biography, everywhere it says "the Goo Goo Dolls," implying that 'the' is not part of their name. You should consider changing this. --Timjurka 23:49, 14 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
You know what, I think he's right. "The" is never capitalized on their website, or on AMG, and half their album covers just have "Goo Goo Dolls." I'll move it back if nobody objects. —Akrabbim 15:49, 10 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
its just Goo Goo Dolls Siddyjain —Preceding undated comment added 12:17, 14 May 2006
Actually, I think the actual name of the band is now "The Goo Goo Dolls". They seemed to have switched over to this name during 1998 - Look at the album covers since then, they all have "The Goo Goo Dolls". Of course, everybody still calls them "Goo Goo Dolls" out of habit. -Yosht 05:35, 12 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'm curious, where did they get the name "Goo Goo Dolls" anyway? My dad asked me, and I had no clue. I think its origins would be a worthy addition to the article to boot.--Pepsidude (talk) 21:59, 14 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Move

[edit]
The following discussion is an archived debate of the proposal. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the debate was move.

  • Agree: No evidence has been presented that their name is "The Goo Goo Dolls." The word "the" is used only to grammatically refer to the band, as in "the [[Goo Goo Dolls]]", not "[[The Goo Goo Dolls]]" (as Timjurka explained above. —Akrabbimtalk 00:48, 16 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Done. —Nightstallion (?) 07:28, 23 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The above discussion is preserved as an archive of the debate. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on this talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.

The above is a debate?? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by T-rex (talkcontribs) .

Not really, but the point is that it's over, and nobody objected. Nightstallion didn't move it until a week after I voted, and nobody else had, so it was safe to move. We had an anon that thought it was still open so I made it more official. —Akrabbimtalk 19:01, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hold on, didn't we just agree their name is merely "Goo Goo Dolls", "the" only present for the sake of proper grammar? Because the article's name is back to "The Goo Goo Dolls". Also for further evidence that their name is indeed simply "Goo Goo Dolls" notice that none of their videos include "the" when they list the name of the artist. Every video refers to them as "Goo goo Dolls" not "The Goo Goo Dolls". — Preceding unsigned comment added by 142.161.76.37 (talkcontribs) 08:56, 8 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sex Maggots

[edit]

It is an urban myth that the Goo Goo Dolls ever had the name the "Sex Maggots". This has been confirmed by John Rzeznik himself on multiple occassions during interviews. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.230.97.161 (talkcontribs) 20:55, 11 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Are you Sure?
InsideCx: The band has been around for quite a while. You started out in Buffalo during the mid-Eighties. Yes, we started out as the Sex Maggots, then became the Goo Goo Dolls, well, and we’re still the Goo Goo Dolls! ([3]) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.245.207.214 (talkcontribs) 20:00, 12 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Okay. Well, the verifiability is more uncertain then. I'm not that familiar with them, I was trying to make some of the grammar more clear and wondered why that excerpt was taken out; if it's inaccurate, that's up to you all. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.245.207.214 (talkcontribs) 23:34, 13 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Pretty sure!! Listen to this interview with John Rzeznik. When they bring up a trivia question about the "Sex Maggots", he says it's an urban myth (Around the 6.5 minute mark of the interview). The Goo Goo Dolls do have a song called "Sex Maggot". — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.70.30.208 (talkcontribs) 15:11, 13 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
NO, this is all true, sorry --T-rex 15:20, 13 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It is true that they did get their name from an ad in True Detective. But the claim that they were the "Sex Maggots" is completely false, as confirmed by John Rzeznik. I think Mr. Rzeznik knows his band better than you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.70.30.208 (talkcontribs) 15:45, 13 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I think you should both agree to disagree, since it would appear the band has told conflicting stories about the origin of the name. However, the more widespread tale is that they were called the Sex Maggots, so just please stick with that. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 210.191.99.13 (talkcontribs) 16:40, 13 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The All Music Guide confirms that they started out as the "Sex Maggots". —Akrabbim 15:40, 10 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I disagree. To me, a spoken interview has more weight than text. For any number of reasons, text is more likely to be inaccurate. As such, if that interview MP3 is accurate (I'm not able to listen to it, so I can't verify it) then I think it should be given more weight.
-- Last Thylacine 20:49, 3 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The name change thing should go in the article. If there are conflicting stories, the article shouldn't just show one; we need some sources, and show the information, not try to piece together the most likely truth ourselves. I remember hearing the Sex Maggots thing on MTV or VH1, so if it's true or false, it's still notable as an urban myth or disputed fact etc. --Scarlet-=Spider-DavE=- 08:50, 11 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I would argue that Wikipedia is about providing factual information. So including an urban myth or disputed fact would seem counterproductive to that end. It would be continuing the propagation of these misconceptions.

—The preceding unsigned comment was added by 64.230.99.83 (talk) 22:09, 1 January 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Hey, guys, they were definitely called the Sex Maggots. I've seen that info in every one of the band's biographies I've ever seen, and there's a chat interview with them here that states so. Scroll down a bit and you'll see them answer the question: [4] --Selo12394 19:41, 29 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello all. I included the name "Sex Maggots" a few months back (or could be years) and I'm shocked to learn about interviews denying this name. However, since they are conflicting stories about the name I suggest it be mentioned in an article. Lord Darksycthe (talk) 12:55, 14 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Stay With You

I fixed the addition that said stay w/ u was number 7 on the billboard 100 b/c it was 7 on adult top 40 not billboard 100. [5]--70.246.16.184 08:56, 16 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed all the chart numbers, since they were mostly incorrect. I appreciate people's enthusiasm for the band, but don't be making up chart numbers. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.48.49.246 (talkcontribs) 20:10, 17 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Chart Numbers and Album Sales

[edit]

I corrected the album sales status, based on http://www.thebulletin.com/archives/2006/september/betterdays.htm , and the chart numbers to reflect the numbers available from the All Music Guide and Billboard online. I also took the liberty of correcting the order of the singles to reflect their dates of release. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 199.212.18.131 (talkcontribs) 21:14, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not certain about the Stay With You chart numbers; if someone could update them and reference where they obtained the information it would be greatly appreciated for verification purposes. I went by the Billboard and AMG numbers online, but I think they may have not updated them. 70.51.61.32 23:45, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

UK Singles Chart Numbers

[edit]

Does anyone have more information about the UK singles chart numbers for the Goo Goo Dolls? There is very litte information present in the article, and it hasn't been updated in ages. If someone could post revised numbers and cite the information source, it would be appreciated. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 199.212.18.131 (talkcontribs) 18:18, 15 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion

[edit]

The rationale for not speedy deleting this article is that it is a very notable band, deleting the article as a whole would harm Wikipedia. The wording is largely the same as it was a year ago. Other sites with similar wordings could well have copied from Wikipedia, none that I found looked like the definitive source of the information. If there is doubt about whether this is a copyvio, re-write the article. Mallanox 23:13, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Singles Discography disputes

[edit]

Someone (70.49.139.165) insists that "Just the Way You Are" and "Fallin' Down" should not be included in the discography because they were not "radio singles" despite their physical existence as promotional singles. I question this assertion--where were these singles sent if not to radio?--but more to the point, I assert that this is no basis for exclusion. A true DISCography is a list of releases. Whether such releases were intended for airplay does not matter. If these actual, physical singles are to be excluded, the section should be renamed "Airplay chart" or something. At the very least, these additional singles should be mentioned in a footnote to the chart. Or they should be listed in the discography with a footnote stating that they were not intended for airplay. Scratchtasia 21:47, 8 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

String of Lies Anecdote

[edit]

String of Lies was released in Superstar Car Wash, which was released before A Boy Named Goo. If Takac ever screamed "Where's our fucking money?", it would have been in a live concert ad-lib I also can't find any sources that back this anecdote up. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.12.119.156 (talk) 21:01, 14 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Not THE Goo Goo Dolls

[edit]

Notice how their logo never capitalizes the "t" in "the", it's because the name is just "Goo Goo Dolls". "the" merely appears to make the name more natural in certain sentences. But even then, you still see it absent a lot. Like no one goes to a "the Goo Goo Dolls" concert, you go to a "Goo Goo Dolls" concert, right? Newbliss (talk) 22:32, 6 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There have been prior discussions about this. As such I moved it back, and think it should stay at Goo Goo Dolls short of a formal request for renaming. --T-rex 20:46, 7 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, if you noticed on their covers Newbliss (starting from "Dizzy up the Girl" in 1998 onward), they all list them as "The Goo Goo Dolls" (stylized, of course) on it. The only exceptions since then have been on the covers of the compilation albums "Ego, Opinion, Art and Commerce" and "Greatest Hits Vol. 2", which both feature largely older pre-"Dizzy up the Girl" recorded material. Without knowing for certain, it would appear they changed to using "The Goo Goo Dolls" on their album covers since the beginning of their mainstream success. However, without a verifiable source, it is probably better to leave this article at "Goo Goo Dolls". 65.93.172.103 (talk) 18:10, 4 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Goo Goo Dolls Day?

[edit]

Why would Buffalo proclaim two days to be Goo Goo Dolls day? And why pick independence day as one of them? This seems unlikely. Not cited anyway... --24.18.62.22 (talk) 06:09, 7 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Because the Goo Goo Dolls gave a large free concert in Buffalo on independence day. --T-rex 20:46, 7 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It's true, there are 2 Goo Goo Dolls days in Buffalo. I believe the first one was chosen after they came home after ABNG (and Name) became a big hit and they were welcomed back home again at a concert in Buffalo. I think it was explained on the GGD's episode of VH1's Behind the Music, so check that for references. Splendor (talk) 16:40, 8 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

'Sobriety' question

[edit]

There's a line in the current version about the song "Iris" whose meaning isn't clear; I can rewrite it to clarify if someone can tell me which way. "He wrote this song while breaking several's years of writer's block and sobriety." Does that mean that he broke several years worth of sobriety, meaning he fell off the wagon, or does it mean that he achieved sobriety at the same point as breaking the several years of writer's block? music style

[edit]

Goos arent Post-Grunge and Grunge especially, and never was before! their style always been (1993-present) a pop-rock music with classic sound and guitar riffs, as Alice Cooper, Bon Jovi, etc. but now their music just a little has become a modern rock, you know...

Post-Grunge is Creed, Fuel, Staind, Seether, Default, Shinedown, Submersed, Breaking Benjamin and more like this... Post-Grunge is not Goo Goo Dolls, Lifehouse, Live, REM, Powderfinger... —Preceding unsigned comment added by Chelirock (talkcontribs) 01:30, 20 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

POST GRUNGE

[edit]

In 90's they played post-grunge, of course their music was more polished than Bush's or Silverchair's, who played in best grunge traditions, but more radio-friendly. Post-Grunge bands first of all are STP, Bush, Live, Candlebox, Foo Fighters, Silverchair, Collective Soul and so on. Live is definitely post-grunge!

P.S.

It's ridiculous to compair Goos With Alice Cooper!)... —Preceding unsigned comment added by User:SV (User talk:S.V.contribs) 01:30, 20 May 2010 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.113.64.39 (talk) [reply]

Singles

[edit]

Just a point, but in the lede it is claimed the had a hit single with "Dizzy Up the Girl" which was an album. The single was "Dizzy"119.15.65.1 (talk) 01:40, 3 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Home Single Released June 8, 2010

[edit]

I added in the single Home's realease date seeing as it had yet to be added here but was already included in "Something For The Rest of Us"'s article, and on top of that, already accorded it's own article. We need to keep these articles in sync! lol :P Bliss 182 (talk) 08:19, 7 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Referenced genres (the only kind that count)

[edit]

I've changed the genres in the infobox to reflect the only one mentioned in the article with a reference (Ref 20). That's Pop rock, although I've reinstated the more general Rock as an obvious parent genre, too. If anybody wants other genres, they'll need to come up with references for them, as is the Wikipedia way. Opinions about grunge, post-grunge, or country-jazz-Thai fusion don't matter. — JohnFromPinckney (talk) 00:45, 9 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Poorly written

[edit]

This article reads like a 7th grade book report. Someone with a sense of the English language needs to rework every section. I've started making changes, but it's maddening. Welcome to Wikipedia. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.158.123.179 (talk) 21:52, 7 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Post-Grunge

[edit]

What kinda source want you to confirm that Goo Goo Dolls are some kind of post-grunge ? I'm going to give some source:

And check the definition here for Post-Grunge, they are one of the top artist on that genre, even on the albums and some songs with post-grunge feels are showed on that article. Check it!

Other websites

Do you need something else to confirm that? --200.8.18.229 (talk) 06:12, 26 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

What's the point of posting a link to top 10 worst Post-Grunge Bands? Sounds like you're trying to bash them to me. Allmusic is not always reliable when it comes to genres. Also Post-Grunge isn't really a genre 'cause how can someone rip off a band that made a living ripping off the pixies,Sonic Youth, Husker Du, and R.E.M? to me Nirvana should just be called Post-Alt if you wanna be like that.--75.65.123.86 (talk) 08:09, 2 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Emmy Nomination Year

[edit]

The page for Grammy Award song of the year says "Iris" was nominated in 1999. This page says it was 1998 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 219.89.216.53 (talk) 08:36, 14 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Right now the page says they won a grammy in 1998, but the linked wikipedia page says they never won that grammy. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 73.252.161.190 (talk) 05:15, 22 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

"The Goo Goo Dolls are the only musicians to have three songs chart on the list."

[edit]

I removed this line from the page because, after viewing the list and counting, it is incorrect. Katy Perry, The Black Eyed Peas, and Nickelback also have three songs on the list, while Maroon 5 and Kelly Clarkson have four, so the Goo Goo Dolls don't even have the most on the list. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 143.226.114.43 (talk) 18:18, 29 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

"Formed on Memorial Day 1986"

[edit]

The article states the band was "formed on Memorial Day 1986". It looks odd (to me), as a) other group's pages aren't so specific about what day they were formed on and b) Memorial Day is only a holiday in the US, and even the link to the Memorial Day page on Wikipedia doesn't tell me what that date was in 1986.

Would it be reasonable to ask that someone with more knowledge about US holidays either changes it to read an actual date, or remove reference to a date/holiday in 1986 so that it matches other group's pages please?

Many thanks MarpoHarks (talk) 18:23, 27 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

In older interviews from ~1988 the bands often mentions they had their first gig on Memorial Day 1986 so that's why I added it to this page. I guess you're right it's not in line with other bands pages so I'll fix the date back to 1986 (someone changed that) and remove the Memorial Day part. --Splendor (talk) 06:00, 2 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello everyone!

I have selected this article to work on for a technical editing class that I am currently in right now. My plan is to read through the article and focus on adding sources/making sure all of the information is correct since this article is about people who are still alive. I welcome any help/advice/correction to my editing process!

Touring drummer Craig Macintyre

[edit]

I keep removing Craig Macintyre as an official member because the band has not announced him becoming a full member.

Instead, Macintyre has been the band's full-time drummer since about 2013 or 2014. He is classified as a "hired gun" musician, a touring musician and paid employee of the band. See the 2019 article in the Worcester Telegram & Gazette. Unless a new announcement says otherwise, Craig must be listed as a touring musician.
