Geographical Origins of Myths

[edit]

In the intro section several modern nation states and other places are listed as sources for the multiple mythologies present in Hellboy. With The Third Wish, The Island, and now Darkness Calls, shouldn't Africa (or something rather more specific, since Africa is an entire continent) be listed there? Gorilla (in seed of destruction tpb)

[edit]

I know this is kind of random, but, does anyone know what the significance of the gorilla and the girl that appear in the images before each chapter of Seed of Destruction. They don't appear in the comic anywhere. Thanks.

ok. I figured it out, I guess they're Monkeyman and Ann O'brien. I wonder, it might be kind of interesting to mention these characters -- but maybe it would be more appropriate on the 'Seed of Destruction' page.
They could be mentioned on the Seed of Destruction page as they were backup stories in the single issues & later collected on their own as a special. The special led to a three issue miniseries & all four comics are collected as Arthur Adams' Monkeyman & O'Brien TPB. The chapter images (as you called them) were the original comic covers when they were originally published.--Hndsmepete 18:29, 12 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Parentage

[edit]

It was missing from Hellboys biography but I thought it was kind of important. STRANGE PLACES states at the end that his father was a prince of Sheol. I got his mothers name from here http://www.internationalhero.co.uk/h/hellboy.htm but I've never heard it before. The website also said Hellboy was conceived in 1852, but when Hellboy starts to hear the ghostly sounds in THE CHAINED COFFIN he comments they havn't been heard for 300 years? Hmm. freaky_dragonlady 23 March 2007

Picture

[edit]

For some reason there is no picture of Hellboy in the right corner, unlike most bios. Just wondering if it was deleted accidentally or something. I noticed that in my browser (Firefox 1.5.0.7 I think) it seems to render at first and then disappear.

BPRD

[edit]

Anyone have ideas on the translation of the BPRD's motto (from the film, unsure about comic books) "In Absentia Luci Tenebrae Vincu"? -- User:Palfrey

"In the absence of light, darkness prevails".
Not hard to deduce that, from watching the movie itself. The Latin is not all that hard either. =] Mackeriv 15:21, 11 Aug 2004 (UTC)
It means "in the absence of light, conquer darkness". "Vincu" From Latin vincere, present active infinitive of vincō. its also the root of the french verb "vaincre". Can be translated to defeat, win or triumph over. Mighty.Yggdrasil (talk) 07:20, 30 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

TMNT

[edit]

I noticed someone added the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to Hellboy's affiliations, but to my knowledge he's never had a crossover with them. Does anyone know why this was added? Jclarke 20:15, Jun 2, 2005 (UTC)

Most likely someone jumping the fancruft gun due to both titles being under the Dark Horse banner. 63.233.19.56 09:55, 16 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

As much as I'd like to see the TMNT team up with Hellboy, it never happened to my knowledge. Furthermore, since when was TMNT a Dark Horse production? The S 03:51, 3 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

TMNT has never been a Dark Horse Production. It is a creator owned work, much like Hellboy. Even though I'm writing this over a year later I just thought that I should point it out to anyone who happens to read this discussion.--Hndsmepete 17:58, 12 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fictional Catholic?

[edit]

Why is Hellboy in the category Fictional Catholics? He doesn't strike me as one. His use of crosses, etc. seem to me to be strictly because they work, rather than because of beliefs any on his part. 17:52, 16 March 2006 (UTC)

Agree with the above. Im removing Hellboy from the categorey. 207.233.110.65 19:08, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

Hellboy was raised as a traditionalist Catholic by Professor Trevor Bruttenholm. He's also a demon and he's seen first hand many times that crosses work againt the forces of evil. I think it's safe to say that he's most likely a Catholic, or at least some kind of Christian. User:Ash Loomis

"While Hellboy fishes around in his pocket for a grenade, his rosary beads fall out. He always carries this symbol of his Catholic faith with him" - Source: Hellboy: Conqueror Worm #3 by Mike Mignola /found on adherents.com. Whether someone (like the original poster) likes it or not. It seems very logical to me that, while Hellboy turns his back on hell being a hellish creature himself, he remains being part of a religion, that puts as much interest in forgivness, salvation and foremost redemption as Catholicism. Nevertheless, the fact that everyone can be saved is one of the pillars of this believe system.

Im sorry to disappoint you but I just read Hellboy conqueror worm. While its true that Hellboy looks in his pocket to get a grenade and a rosary falls out there is no didascalia or bubble explaining his thoughts or feelings.[1] I will also have to point put that "Adherents.com" isn't exactly a good site for comic book resources and seems to be biased toward religion. The call was good, Hellboy has been using "anything that works", I've read Hellboy and BPRD up to the 34th tpb; so far no sign so far that he's christian or anything else. Wait a minute

[edit]

While I'm pleased that a Hellboy animated series is in the works, and even more pleased that Ron Perlman will be attached to it, what's up with Doug Jones being listed? He didn't actually provide Abe Sapien's voice in the movie. Master Deusoma 20:22, 8 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Doug Jones is indeed supplying the voice for the animated Abe Sapien. I think he was offered the part partly because he didn't get to be heard in the movie. 13:27, 15 July 2006 (UTC)

Not only has Doug provided the voice of Abe Sapien in both animated films (and will continue to do so if the films go to series), Guillermo del Toro told fans (and Doug) at the Fangoria's Weekend of Horrors convention in June 2006 that Doug will be both body and voice of Abe in the Hellboy sequel, Hellboy II: The Golden Army. Amazing Race

[edit]

Should I remove that reference to some guy on the Amazing Race having the nickname "Hellboy"? It sounds too trivial to be worth noting.

Original Sources

[edit]

Does anyone happen to know where Mike Mignola got the orginal plot for "Hellboy: A Christmas Underground"? I remember reading that it was derived from folklore but I don't know anything more.

In "The Chained Coffin and Others", Mike Mignola notes that "Like 'The Corpse', this one was inspired by a folktale I read years ago. It was an odd thing about a girl who looks under a bush and finds stairs leading down to some kind of palace, where she falls in love with an invisible prince. The stairs underground thing struck me as a sort of symbolic death/grave thing [...]" He added the Christmas angel to the story later on. So who knows exactly which folktale it was he read; he notes that the hardest thing about "The Varcolac" was tracking down where he had read that one little tidbit before, and this one might be almost as hard. Hellboy (comics)?

[edit]

Hellboy now redirects to Hellboy (comics) and this doesn't make much sense. This has been discussed quite a bit over splitting Battle Royale and Neverwhere - the original book, film, TV series forms the main entry and then you can have a disambiguation page to link to other related aterial (if need - it can probably be done in the article in this case). I won't move it back but I'd suggest it is moved. (Emperor 00:13, 20 September 2006 (UTC))[reply]

It's done. We didn't need a disambiguated title at all. ☢ Ҡiff 05:39, 21 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The Penanggalan

[edit]

A while back I re-subscribed to Wizard magazine and got with it a free "exclusive" comic containing a Hellboy and B.P.R.D. story. The first was called Hellboy: the Penanggalan. The second and last, the B.P.R.D. story, was called Born Again. I'm wondering if these should be added to the uncollected comics section but I don't know if they have been printed elsewhere. The Penanggalan was definitely done by Mike Mignola.--TylerXKJ 00:11, 25 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It is being collected in "Hellboy Volume 7: The Troll Witch and Others TPB" along with the "Dark Horse Book Of" stories and "Makoma".--Hndsmepete 18:17, 12 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Affiliations

[edit]

Added Kate to the affiliations list - she's mentioned on the page, but there's no link. Which is odd, since I had the impression she and HB were fairly good friends. I'd put something in the biography section but I don't have the comics with me and I'd probably just cite it wrong.209.89.155.128 02:18, 7 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

re: Powers and Abilities

[edit]

"A possible reason for his dislike of firearms is the fact that mechanical devices, especially the B.P.R.D.'s high-tech gadgetry, tend to foul up when he uses them. No explanation of this is given, but gun jams, exploding jetpacks, and other mishaps appear common around Hellboy, quite possibly due to his demonic nature."

I believe whoever wrote this is referring to the story "Wake the Devil" (HB#2) where a number of devices malfunction. And while no explicit explanation has been given all of these devices display the Zinco Corporation logo and since the apparent head of this company , Roderick Zinco, is assisting Rasputin and co it is not unfeasible that perhaps these devices have been sabotaged to make the BPRDs life more difficult. yes?/no? The Taste of Monkeys 13:30, 14 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes it was only in (Wake the Devil) where his gun, jetpack etc failed. It was only because the BPRD was using sabotaged Zinco products (zinco -the millionaire Rasputin employed at the beginning of the story arc). It was not only Hellboys zinco machinery that failed and exploded but all BPRD zinco walkie talkies, comms and even a plane exploded, killing a number of unamed BPRD team mebers. I have removed the paragraph. Hellboy does not like guns much merely because he's a terrible shot.

The Hand of Doom bit of the Powers and Abilities section should be added down with the other Hand of Doom stuff, and then that section should be a subsection of Powers and Abilities. I'm going to make the change, unless anyone can see a reason not to. Captain Red Hook 22:03, 5 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The “Powers and abilities” section is full of outdated and incorrect information. I think a complete rewrite is required. In addition, the title is misleading since Hellboy does not technically possess any powers. 65.95.42.183 (talk) 01:27, 17 January 2011 (UTC) Chris[reply]

Template

I was just editting Template: The War of the Worlds and it occured to me Template: Hellboy would seem like a good idea. Thoughts? (Emperor 04:51, 18 March 2007 (UTC))[reply]

Good one, but make sure to include a "related articles" thing to include Amazing Screw-On HeadKieff | Talk 04:52, 18 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Sure if everyone can decide on a criteria for inclusion (otherwise you face editting wars) then that shouldn't be a problem. Possibly have it for other relevant work by Mignola? (Emperor 05:35, 18 March 2007 (UTC))[reply]

Re TIMELINE

[edit]

The first entry is incorrect in stating that Hellboy is "born" in Scotland. In Seed of Destruction he is summoned from Scotland it is true but his actual birth/manefestation occours in East Bromwich, England. Ill give it a go in changing this but Im sorta new at this, I can but try The Taste of Monkeys 23:06, 4 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

First Appearance?

[edit]

While the sketches in the San Diego book predate John Byrne's Next Men #21, it is not an appearance as tradionally defined in comic fandom. Would it not be worthy to note the first actual comic the character appeared in, instead of trying to fight the mass majority of collectors and fandom through a Wikipedia article? Superman and many other comic characters appeared in ads or previews in other magazines before the actual first appearance came out, yet most people do not consider these first appearances. If we include promotional sketches as a first appearance, is not every characters first appearance as a sketch really occuring on the drawing board of the artist? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.145.31.10 (talk) 19:12, 19 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, it is a 4-page story that appears in San Diego Comic-Con Comics #2 - not sketches. It is the true 1st appearance of Hellboy. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.253.88.2 (talk) 22:58, 7 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Scottish comics character?

[edit]

Hi, im not quite sure how to edit a page fairly but have noticed that Hellboy has been put under the category 'scottish comics characters' even though his description clearly states that he was 'born' in East Bromwich, England. Lawful King of the Britons

[edit]

According to the latest issue, Hellboy's mother was a female descendant of Mordred's daughter, and Hellboy is the first male descendant of that line since Mordred's executed sons. Thus, he is the lawful king of Britain, and she even gives him Excalibur to lead the dead armies of Britain against Queen Mab. This, or at least that he is the descendant of King Arthur, should be in the article, as well as his alias - she specifically says something like "as well as 'Beast of the Apocalypse', you are the 'Lawful King of Britain'".98.223.111.14 (talk) 01:18, 15 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

BPRD contradiction?

Indeed you are right. In B.P.R.D.: Hollow Earth and Other Stories its stated on page 8 that ″[the B.P.R.D. was] Established in 1944 by the late professor Trevor Bruttenholm and an international collective in response to Nazi – – and later Soviet – – occult experiments. Its fonction in the present it to monitor, investigate and contain supernatural events worldwide.″[1]
If its an international collective, it cannot be a federal agency. This should be changed. Mighty.Yggdrasil (talk) 07:54, 30 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The page is for Hellboy, the comic book character, not the movie character. Only in the movies does he file his horns. In the comic book, he breaks them. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jjloy (talkcontribs) 14:22, 4 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Right hand of Doom…?

[edit]

Don’t find this section to be at all clear. Firstly, it is introduced in a section of its own, without any introduction or explanation; when Hellboy’s stone hand is mentioned prior to this, it isn’t named as “the Right hand of Doom”, so it is unclear if they are one and the same thing. Is “The Right Hand of Doom” the stone hand that Hellboy has, and if so, is it “his” hand, or some sort of glove device he is wearing? The article makes it sound like an artifact - it has belonged to someone else - but doesn’t then explain why it now appears not just to belong to, but be a part of Hellboy. Or, does Hellboy have a stone hand anyway, and the Right Hand of Doom is a relic/ artifact that Hellboy gaiend/ possess/ wears in addition to his “real” hand. Does he not actually have a right hand and the stone hand/ Hand of Doom is like a prosthetic? Could someone who knows perhaps clarify things? Thanks. Jock123 (talk) 08:25, 4 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

It's simply his right hand :) I think it was mentioned that his father gave it to him but it's a minor detail in the comic. mayby I'll improve this paragraph, but I think you overthink this. Mithoron (talk) 12:25, 5 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
