Name

[edit]

Your name in swedish wouldn't have to be Nikolaj as stated on your user page, it can also be Nikolai, Nikola, Nikolas or most preferably Niklas.

Thanks for the clarifications. ɳȉčḩåḽṗ | 19:25, Dec 2, 2004 (UTC)

Nichalp, may I invite you to a new WikiProject to improve the quality and depth of cricket articles on Wikipedia. It's located on Wikipedia:WikiProject Cricket. I'm taking the approach of let's see who's interested and let's see which bits we want to improve/expand to begin with. Once we know that, hopefully we can work together to improve Wikipedia's cricket coverage. jguk 16:30, 4 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Article Licensing

[edit]

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

OR

Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk)

Deletion of a proposal of mine

[edit]

Hello Nichalp, I saw in Version history of Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals), that you reverted my proposal. See [1]. I suppose this was done by accident or to be more specific a failure in the edit conflict detection of the MediaWiki software. I suppose this because I run two times into that problem, see Bugreport: [2]. If it was intentionally that you reverted it it would be nice if you can point me to the right page for this purpose (I'm not that familar with the English Wikipedia). Wai-Wai

[edit]
Updated DYK query Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Wai-Wai, which you created. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the "Did you know?" talk page.
 • Your comment makes me unsure, but I think it was up for at least 12 hours. The shelf-life of snippets should be between 6-24 hours. And I think it was up for substantially more than 6 hours. I'll go and check the history to be sure. Feel free to submit another facts for a later update. :)
I've checked and this diff shows that it was up for 17,5 hours, which is long enough considering items of 24 hours or older are considered "stale". Sorry for informing you so late "your" article was featured. I hope you enjoy it neverheless. Mgm|(talk) 20:15, Jan 6, 2005 (UTC)
No probs. Thanks for the interest. Nichalp 20:23, Jan 6, 2005 (UTC)

Your Edits to India

[edit]

Hi Nichalp. Looking at your recent edits to India, would I be right in thinking that you are a Muslim and you have been removing Hindu links? Or is it just that you want to keep it a strictly secular article?

I am an English white caucasian living in Croydon. We have a large Indian community here - you may have heard of Thornton Heath where many Indians live. I would like to throw this thought at you.

Our newspapers occasionally print stories such as 'Primary School Nativity Play cancelled for fear of offending other religions'. I have a firm belief that that is not the way to build a strong multi-cultural, multi-faith society. Instead each faith should be encouraged to celebrate its faith enthusiastically with members of other faiths allowed to watch and join in, if they wish.

I suggest you put a notice in India#External links:

This page follows the Indian Constitution and is strictly secular. Any religious links will be removed. Links to Indian religious topics can be found at: ...

As I say, it is just a passing thought, I am certainly not going to touch the India page. Cheers, salaam or shanti (as appropriate), RHaworth 04:22, 2005 Jan 8 (UTC)

Gzornenplatz

[edit]

Nichalp, I have requested on WP:RfAr that the ArbCom exercises its discretion that it gave itself in an earlier case against Gzornenplatz to block him for up to 30 days for not providing edit summaries when reverting. If you have examples of him doing this on India-related images, it would be useful if you would add them as evidence. Kind regards, jguk 21:15, 10 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Hi, it's not a case of having anything personal against Gzornenplatz/Wik, it's more a case of encouraging him to desist from disruptive behaviour. His ongoing spat with Cantus has gotten totally out of hand. Kind regards, jguk 19:34, 11 Jan 2005 (UTC)

PS I have a digital camera, but no cricket equipment. I'll add some piccis of the Oval next summer. It'll be good to have one of Michael Vaughan lifting the Ashes.

I haven't played cricket since 2000 - lazy, aren't I? :) It's just too easy for me to get to the Oval where I am, so I go and see Surrey play instead. jguk 22:01, 11 Jan 2005 (UTC)

500 Km is local?

[edit]

Hello again. You popped up on my watch list because you have edited subscriber trunk dialling. Is 500 Km a typo for 50 ? A quick look at the tariffs of Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd suggests that 50 Km is the correct figure. Can you substantiate 500 Km? (I do realise that a dialling prefix is not the same thing as a tariff.) -- RHaworth 16:00, 2005 Jan 11 (UTC)

Confused

[edit]

I want to upload a few pictures of the places I visited while on vacation. I am confused as to what tag to put GFDL, PD-self, cc-by. Could someone please guide me? Can I use all tags? PS. Please reply on my talk page. Nichalp 19:21, Jan 11, 2005 (UTC)

PD-self is appropriate if you release the image and give up all control over it. GFDL is the default license for anything uploaded to Wikipedia (but need not necessarily apply), and cc-by (or SA) are acceptable as well. Any of these are options. So, you can tag PD, or GFDL, or CC, or GFDL and CC. 119 05:36, 12 Jan 2005 (UTC)
I'd like to expand on that a little. All of those options are fine choices -- it's entirely up to you whether to tag your images as GFDL or PD or one of the CC licenses. It depends on how much control you want to keep over the images.
 • Tagging an image PD allows anyone to use it for any purpose. If you don't care what happens to the image, you just want to give it to the world, then PD-self is an excellent choice. But some corporation could use your image in one of their products, and they wouldn't have to acknowlege you or pay you, so not everyone is willing to tag it PD. Tagging an image with PD is the same as giving the image away to the public at large.
 • GFDL is the default. It says that anyone can use your picture for anything they want, BUT if they use your image in a larger work (like an encyclopedia), then that whole encyclopedia has to be also released under the GFDL. (Wikipedia is itself licensed under the GFDL.) It's more complicated, but it (in theory) encourages others to release their own works under a free license, since if they want to use your images, they have to. Also, if a company wants to use the image, but is unwilling to release their product under the GFDL, you still own the copyright, so you could still sell them the right to use your images.
 • CC-by is sort-of like PD, but anyone who uses the image has to credit you. (But they don't have to pay you.) I don't personally care whether I'm credited or not, but some people do.
If you release an image under the GFDL, you can also release it under a CC license. But if you release it into the public domain, that's it -- you can't license it in any way, since you don't own the copyright anymore.
If you have any more questions, feel free to ask me. – Quadell (talk) (help) 16:07, Jan 14, 2005 (UTC)
No doubts, your explication was really good. Nichalp 20:31, Jan 14, 2005 (UTC)

Someone suggested this article for "DYK". Could you expand this article a bit. At the moment it's too stubby to feature. Articles featured in the "did you know"-section are usually over 1000 bytes. Mgm|(talk) 09:15, Jan 12, 2005 (UTC)

Re: map of Indian States

[edit]

Hi Nichalp, I really wish you had approached me three days ago. I am too busy to do anything now. Sorry about that. Or maybe you could wait till Tuesday. I have worked on a SVG version of the map, it more accurately depicts the international/disputed boundaries. Its poster size but since it is scalable you should be able to easily import it into an existing map using (well I use GIMP) whatever software you have for image editing. Its been on my disk since October I never went around to add states (which was my objective.) --Ankur 23:41, 13 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Wow!! I can't believe how good Gangtok has become. Another thing though - it looks like you are preparing for GRE. --Ankur 18:06, 15 Jan 2005 (UTC)
I'll second that Wow! Really, WOW! Great job on Gangtok. I wish every city article was as well-done. Thank you for pointing me to the article, and also thank you for writing it. Job well done. SWAdair | Talk 11:14, 18 Jan 2005 (UTC)

The Indian Map is just about done - took two sittings. I did it from scratch, just border outlines - No names, No rivers - nothing. I'll sit down to finish it in a day or two. Like I said it is scalable, so every state can be individually scaled to get state maps (UTs and Goa are too small so they can not be scaled - I'll see what can be done). So the good thing is that every state article will have its own state map. If wikipedia allows uploading svg documents I will upload the entire document else I will put it on my website. I've been busier than I expected so its taking time. Adding cities etc will take one more day. Soon there will be an image here - Image:India-Map-Blank :-) --Ankur 08:56, 24 Jan 2005 (UTC)

The Map is done (except for dotted international border.) About UTs, they are all clearly visible (including borders) but any given UT can not be scaled up since they are very small for that. It is a vector map and its nearly 10 times bigger than the current map. Most states are bigger than the current Map we have for India. But since the Public Domain map I used for making this map did not have enough detail I could not make the UTs with a good border.
About thee: निकॉलेस is the correct approximation of how your name will be pronounced in Hindi and I have never heard the hindi निकोलिस as an equivalent of Nicholas. So in case you wrote निकोलिस for the sake of pronouncing your name in Hindi I think you should replace it with निकॉलेस. If on the other hand निकोलिस is the Hindi equivalent of Nicholas - cool!! As far as I know, the Adil Shahi kings of Bijapur were nobles of the former Bahmani Sultanate who took control of the Bijapur region after collapse of the Bahmanids. I don't know if they are of Afghan, Persian, or Turkish ancestry, but they were distinct from the Mughals i.e. the descendants of Babur. Tom Radulovich 18:50, 5 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Very good

[edit]

Very good on Sikkim. I see that you are interested on Sikkim related-topics, an you are the right person I am finding. Sikkim article needs improvemet, and I think we should work together.

On things related to the Tribes of Arunachal Pradesh, do you have anything to contribute and help me out? I am also enthuasiastic in that field as well.

Good Luck in wiki.

Mr Tan, 4.48, 6 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Hello, Nicholas, I have enhanced on the content of Arunachal Pradesh. However, I think that the content of History of Sikkim should be improved further, notably on the immigration of the Bhutia in the 17th century and also the very beginnings of Sikkim as a chiefdom with the help of this website article: [3]

Thanks. Mr Tan, 14.48, 18 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Korean Buddhism

Good try, but I see that your Kim dynasty should be shifted to Kim (Korean name), since this thing has no relations with Korean Buddhism.

International subscriber dialing

[edit]

Please take a look at your article International subscriber dialing. The wording is unclear and I was unable to figure out what you meant by it. Thanks, — Brim 10:45, Feb 6, 2005 (UTC)

I second that. -- RHaworth 11:42, 2005 Feb 6 (UTC)

For your information, I am a Singaporean. However, I am interested about the affairs of NE India, Korea, China and Southeast Asia. Many of my work is concentrated on affairs related to Arunachal Pradesh. I have visited India many times as well.

Concerning about the article Sikkim, where should I edit? The notices you put up and the history pages between Sikkim and Sikkim/temp makes me pretty confused. You told the general edit not to edit, but I saw a number of other users editing it. Forgive me, but I think that the History of Sikkim should be put up there and I have made some gramatical edits upon it. And yes, the [Category:Himalayan peoples]. I will add the category Tribes of Arunachal Pradesh] on it.

I will also appreciate if you think that the Lepcha should be strictly placed on the category Ethnic Groups of Nepal rather than on [Category:Himalayan peoples], to avoid confusion, since the Lepcha is on the [category:Ethnic Groups of Nepal], which is a sub-category of [category:Himalayan People].

Based on what I see on your edits, your Grammar impresses me, and that is the kind I like. If you know about Wikipedia:Pushing to 1.0, you are one of those articles that deserves to be in that category.

Thanks.

Mr Tan 8.29, 7 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Well, the Lepchas are natives of Nepal as well as in Sikkim, but in Nepal, most of the natives are only found on regions bordering on Sikkim. So, if a category of ethnic groups of sikkim is being put up as well, I'm willing to include it as well.

Congratulations! I'm impressed with your Sikkim article. It is very, very good. I have nominated your article for the Featured articles.

Nichalp, do you any information about the Tribes of Arunachal Pradesh? There seems to be a total of 82 tribes and I only have 40 to 50 tribes listed there.

Mr Tan 11.09, 8 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Ah yes, I also needed some help on the Arunachal Pradesh article. I did some improvements, but having you to help me will be my greatest honour. Thanks a lot, Sir! Mr Tan 10.50, 8 Feb 2005 (UTC)

I did much of the content myself, particlularly History, religion and economy. However, I think that the Tribes of Arunachal Praesh should be shifted to the People category instead. I need your help in this aspect of deleting the page off. Thanks.

Mr Tan 09.30, 9 Feb 2005 (UTC)

No, what I mean is that I need your help to shift the contents of the Tribes of Arunachal Pradesh to the Arunachal Pradesh article, then delete the Tribes of Arunachal Pradesh article after the shifting.

Thanks.

Mr Tan 1.14, 10 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Hi Nichalp, I noticed your good edits to the Sikkim article. But, I've a minor issue of ambiguity, which I've raised at Image talk:Sikkimdistricts.png. Please have a look at it. -- Sundar 04:54, Feb 8, 2005 (UTC)

UK tax

[edit]

VAT is born by the end-user. Suppose we have a VAT rate of 10% (really it's 17.5%, but 10%'s easier for examples).

Suppose jguk Ltd, a company, is a trader. jguk Ltd buys goods of £60 (net of VAT) and sells them for £100 (net of VAT) and incur £10 in labour costs in doing so.

It pay its supplier £66 (ie £60 plus VAT of 10%). It receives £110 from its customer (ie £100 plus VAT of 10%). The net VAT it has collected of £4 (ie £10-£6), is then paid over to HM Customs and Excise. Note that in effect jguk Ltd's customer bears the whole £10 - with £4 collected by jguk Ltd, and £6 collected from jguk Ltd's supplier and supplier's suppliers.

jguk Ltd's profits are £30 (ie £100 less £60 less the £10 labour costs). jguk Ltd pays corporation tax on these profits. Assuming jguk Ltd is taxed at the full corporation tax rate of 30%, it will pay £9. The £9 is borne by jguk Ltd. Kind regards, jguk 19:00, 21 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Hi - just responding to jguk on something else and saw your query. Value added tax and corporation tax are very different animals. VAT is effectively a sales or turnover tax (like GST in Australia and New Zealand); CT is a profits tax, effectively an form of income tax paid by companies. They are calculated in very different ways.
So, looking at your example, you have a company producing 1,000 items and selling them £100 plus VAT each, a total of £100,000 (say, a carpentry business producing wooden goods). I won't ignore the cost of supplies, as it is illustrative for both taxes. The wood costs £30,000 plus VAT and the company employs carpenters who are paid £50,000 (including all payroll taxes, social security contributions, etc).
With a 10% VAT, the company would buy its wood (input) for £33,000 and sell the wooden goods (output) for £110,000, and the company would pay VAT of £10,000 (output) less £3,000 (input) - that is, £7,000 net - over to HM Customs & Excise. Note that the output VAT is a cost of the customer - the company is acting as an unpaid tax collector for HMCE. The input VAT is a cost for the company, since the company has to pay it over to the person who sells the wood to it, who will themselves have to pay it over at their output VAT to HMCE, but the company's input VAT can generally be set off against output VAT due to HMCE.
Corporation tax is paid on profits (and capital gains). Generally, input VAT is ignored for this purpose where - like here - it is fully recoverable against output VAT (some types of supply are exempt from VAT, so the supplier does not have to charge its customer VAT, but the supplier is also unable to recover input VAT on the VATable supplies that it receives and uses to make its exempt supplies). So the company makes a profit of £20,000, being the total sales revenue (ignoring VAT) of £100,000 less the £80,000 cost of sales (the £50,000 staff costs plus £30,000 cost of raw materials). This profit is subject to corporation tax at, say, 19% - so £3,800 is payable to the Inland Revenue (peculiarly, for historical reasons, we have two separate revenue authorities in the UK, but they are being merged with effect from April this year to form HM Revenue & Customs).
I hope this is reasonably clear ;) -- ALoan (Talk) 10:11, 24 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Maps

[edit]

I'm just a novice at making maps, learning the tricks of the trade. :) Ankur is the real pro at cartography. Since he is away, I don't mind volunteering for making a map. However you would have to provide me with a reference map — preferably a map which is clear and does not have to much detail. Nichalp 18:40, Feb 18, 2005 (UTC)

I don't think Chennai is ripe for FAC. There's a lot of scope for improvement, especially the table, headings and references. It would be blitzkrieged with objections if you were to nominate it right now. Nichalp 18:40, Feb 18, 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for your help. I do agree that Chennai article needs a lot of improvement. You experience with Mumbai would be of real help. As for the map, we need a map showing the areas with "non-trivial" number of Tamil speakers, may be the intensity shall be proportional to the density/absolute number. I'll get you the population figures. Thanks. -- Sundar 04:30, Feb 23, 2005 (UTC)

This has info on major settlements. For minor settlements mentioned in the Geographic distribution section, we can assume some minimal population density or try to look up the web. -- Sundar 05:40, Feb 23, 2005 (UTC)
