Correct name

[edit]

Is the name of the city "Antigua Guatemala" or is it a city named "Antigua" in the country "Guatemala" (in which case it should be at Antigua, Guatemala. Tokerboy 23:44 Dec 4, 2002 (UTC)

My Hammond Citation Atlas has it as Antigua. -- Zoe
I believe it is officially "Antigua Guatemala", which means Old Guatemala, as this was the city called Guatemala before the present Guatemala City. Locally it is often called "La Antigua", and I sometimes heard "Guatemala la Antigua". IMO the name should stay as it is, and Antigua, Guatemala be made into a redirect, which I will do immediately. -- Infrogmation
It is officially "La Antigua Guatemala". I was just shardy hit me up a late night soaking wet turn the bed into a slip n slide and I'll try to dig up some literature to cite in the article. TenaciousT 23:03, 23 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Wrong information?

[edit]

Someone posted recently (more recently than the most recent edit) on a blog, in a general attack on Wikipedia, that "Much of the time the information is just wrong, as it the case of the entry for Antigua, Guatemala." [1]. He doesn't, however, specify any particular inaccuracies. Nothing in the article stands out to me as wrong, but I've added an "unreferenced" tag to it so that the information in it can be verified. --LostLeviathan 01:26, 16 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

He identifies himself as Nicolas Martin. He wrote again and complained specifically about the history [2], so I tagged that section. <>< tbc 19:13, 10 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I improved the section, maybe now is more accurate and is time to remove the tag. Gtrojan 20:54, 15 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It is Antigua Guatemala

[edit]

I'll refer you to the city government's website: http://www.munideantigua.com/antigua.htm

As I remember from my third grade civics text book (I'm Guatemalan), the official name is "Antigua Guatemala," which could be transalted as either "Old Guatemala" or "Former Guatemala." This is because, as the article explains, it was the colonial capital of Guatemala until it was moved in the late 18th century to it's current location. So today we have "Ciudad de Guatemala" and "Ciudad de la Antigua Guatemala". Sometimes, and mostly for the sake of tradition, the two cities are respectively called "Guatemala de la Asuncion" and "Santiago de los Caballeros de Guatemala." It is incorrect in Spanish to use the article, "El" or "La," as part of the name of a city or country. The only country that keeps the article as an official part of its name is El Salvador.

So keep it as it is, "Antigua Guatemala." And fix the part about it meaning "City of the Antiquity of Guatemala." That's a ridiculous translation. If it were that, the city would be called "Ciudad de la Antiguedad de Guatemala," which sounds way too pretentious, and most Guatemalans would surely make fun of it. The Oficial Name is La Antigua Guatemala

[edit]

TenaciousT has it right. The name is La Antigua Guatemala. If you visit the City Hall site you can see the name has three elements: (1) La (2) Antigua (3) Guatemala. Which roughly traslate at The Old Guatemala.

Information about Volcan de Agua is inaccurate

[edit]

In this article, it is mentioned that the reason that the "Water" Volcano (Volcan de Agua) is that the volcano had the crater filled with water, and that water came out of there when the former capital city was destroyed. The article Volcán de Agua has a more accurate description of the reasons for that name.

Content lacking: religion, culture, clothing

[edit]

this is a good place and this is a good information of this article but a don`t see what is his religion? what is his culture? what is his tipical cloth? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.230.129.130 (talk) 23:04, 1 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Especially relevant as Antigua is known for its Semana Santa (Easter Week) traditions and customs, such as the "[al]fombras" made of flowers and colored sawdust (which probably merits a separate page as a form of dry painting). Also the local weaving tradition is notable, and folkstyle painting in the naive genre. -- Deborahjay (talk) 19:24, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Weather

[edit]

The weather in Antigua can be nice during the whole year, especially since it's located by the tropic area. It's high altitude prevents the city not to get too hot during the summer time. The day time temperature during the year rises up to the 70's. During the night it's temperature drops to the 50's which can be pretty cold. Antigua's rainy season starts in May and ends around September. During the rainy seasons, it rains almost everyday, mostly during late afternoon and evening. These rainy days can get heavy, and include some thunder and lightning. Antigua's enjoyable weather is what attracts visitors from North America to come and visit. Most of the visitors come during the winter season in U.S., while in Antigua is warm. --Pansaverde89 (talk) 06:16, 1 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Climate? Air pollution? Safety?

Climate? Air pollution? Safety? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.166.205.145 (talk) 17:04, 4 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Climate: perfect. Air pollution: negligible. Safety: variable. This is not a travel guide but I thought I'd add these comments for the satisfaction of whoever asked the question.
Also, the comment, "If you so wished, you could spend endless amounts of time frequenting charming eateries looking for that perfect hidden jewel in Antigua," sounds like advertising and is an exaggeration. Antigua is a small city with a limited number of fine restaurants. An industrious tourist can spot them all in a day's walk. 71.194.38.54 (talk) 08:07, 22 January 2010 (UTC)Larry Siegel[reply]

Parts of the article are written like a travel brochure

[edit]

Several parts of the article are written like an advertisement. The writing style is unprofessional and doesn't sound like a serious reference. The problems with the section on cuisine are especially evident. However, I can't edit it completely because of my lack of knowledge about Antigua. —Preceding unsigned comment added by OmgItsTheSmartGuy (talkcontribs) 06:02, 5 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I recently enlarged the thumbs to 180px -- the existing Gallery template auto-formats them to 100px. Another editor reverted, citing WP:MOS

This topic comes up pretty regularly. There's an unfixable bug in the Gallery software that prevents user prefs from overriding the default size. Hence 180 px seems a reasonable compromise, given the software limits. 100px, to these aging eyes, is unacceptably small.

The same editor also reverted my substitution of this photo (left side),

New
Old

-- for the one on the right. Well, this is a matter of taste, so other editors opinions are welcome! Thanks, Pete Tillman (talk) 20:07, 20 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Principally, the foreground of the new pic contains too many obstructions. Chensiyuan (talk) 00:44, 21 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed -- while a different angle, the flowers/leaves are too distracting. Manderiko (talk) 01:01, 21 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I see your point(s). So I'll just put back the bigger thumbs, OK? Cheers, Pete Tillman (talk) 20:48, 22 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

this article needs work

To heavily weighted towards history and being a photo gallery, should contain other sections like transport. LibStar (talk) 15:24, 13 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi LibStar. I have added a external link to Wikivoyage in the "External Links" section. You will find there all the information there is to know for transportation and travel for this location. Regards, --Nerdoguate (talk) 18:03, 23 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
