"filterable"

[edit]

The story about "filterable" may not be true, and I would appreciate confirmation or refutation. It comes from my experience with some oceanographers who insisted "filterable" means "that which is caught on a filter". There is a reason NFR was changed to TSS, I'd appreciate others input - Marshman 04:51, 24 Sep 2004 (UTC)

other-than-water terms

[edit]

This TSS article, and the TDS article, are very confusing to a new reader. What is the proper term for *everything* in the water, aside from the pure water? And then, how is this other-than-water portion divvied up, terminology-wise? Each of these articles should start with such material clearly stated to put the topic in usable context. -69.87.199.87 (talk) 10:41, 6 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"nak lagi crilah sndiri" Why is this phrase in the article? I can find no reference to it online. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.246.202.70 (talk) 21:00, 9 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • -*Also, the introductory paragraph fails to succinctly detail what TSS is. It instead tells the reader about the most confusing aspect of TSS. Perhaps someone with more knowledge then I can change it? 498.255.32.243 (talk) 04:57, 21 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Contradiction with TDS article

[edit]

In the article «Total dissolved solids» is written:

«Total dissolved solids are differentiated from total suspended solids (TSS), in that the latter cannot pass through a sieve of two micrometres and yet are indefinitely suspended in solution. The term "settleable solids" refers to material of any size that will not remain suspended or dissolved in a holding tank not subject to motion, and exclude both TDS and TSS. Settleable solids may include larger particulate matter or insoluble molecules.»

But in the TSS article there is no mention about that TSS are those particles which can indifinitely be suspended. Moreover, it is written that in faster moving water the larger particles can be found, and these particles usualy «of interest». Of course, these larger particles WILL settle when the water will stop moving. --217.67.117.64 (talk) 10:32, 2 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Merge with TDS

[edit]

I propose a merge with TDS to clear up the problems described on this page and on TSS. Longer post on the topics can be found on the TDS talk. Morphriz (talk) 07:31, 18 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I take the above message as a notice that a discussion on the matter of merging the articles titled "Total dissolved solids" and Total suspended solids into a single article about water quality and classification was started at Talk:Total dissolved solids#Merge? "Suspended" and "dissolved" are two distinct concepts. Just as one might propose merging "apples" and "oranges" into a "fruit" article, but not "oranges" into "apples" or "apples" into "oranges", it makes no sense to me to merge "suspended" into "dissolved", or vice versa. Discussions of proposals to merge articles should only take place in one section on one page, so as to mitigate confusion. Please do not "second" this proposal on this page. Seconding the proposal at Talk:Total dissolved solids#Merge? should be sufficient.
But I feel despair at the prospect that, a decade after the discussion was started, any productive editing by someone with competence in the topic will happen anytime soon. – wbm1058 (talk) 16:22, 30 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Proposal to merge Total suspended solids with TDS meter into Total dissolved solids

[edit]
Seconded. Specifically:
{{Merge to|Total dissolved solids|TDS meter|date=October 2019|discuss=Talk:TDS_meter}}
(erm, that template is buggy.) Suggestion is actually that this page (Total suspended solids) and TDS meter be merged into Total dissolved solids. --50.201.195.170 (talk) 17:25, 30 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
The correct syntax for your proposal is {{Merge|TDS meter|target=Total dissolved solids|date=October 2019|discuss=Talk:TDS_meter}} – I've placed that template on the article page, where it's intended to be used. – wbm1058 (talk) 22:45, 10 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the responses! OTOH, that results in , and I think that "It has been suggested that this page be merged with Y to Z" sounds very awkward or not grammatical, and "Proposed: Merge X and Y into Z" is better. --50.201.195.170 (talk) 08:22, 17 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, "Proposed:" is more concise than "It has been suggested that". Please start discussions to change the template wording at Template talk:Merge. Thanks, wbm1058 (talk) 02:23, 27 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Done. --50.201.195.170 (talk) 04:46, 31 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
See Template talk:Merge#Proposed wording improvement (to Merge). – wbm1058 (talk) 20:53, 10 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You haven't actually replied there. --50.201.195.170 (talk) 02:00, 13 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
OK, now I have, belatedly, replied. I've implemented your proposed wording change. – wbm1058 (talk) 19:40, 20 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
This is the talk page for discussing "Total suspended solids". Does a "total dissolved solids TDS) meter also measure suspended solids? If not, then bringing up TDS meter on this page is off-topic, and this sideshow has by now wasted hours of my time that could otherwise have been spent on actually productive editing. – wbm1058 (talk) 16:22, 30 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
This is the talk page for discussing Total suspended solids, the article. No. Wrong; doesn't follow. (Sorry you feel that way; I urge you to AGF and notice that you have contributed to some of the miscommunication that has used up (I'll use that term over your less collegial "wasted") hours of my time.)--50.201.195.170 (talk) 00:26, 1 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Discuss the matter of merging TDS meter into Total dissolved solids at Talk:TDS meter#Much nonsense (Merge?), NOT HERE. Please? wbm1058 (talk) 16:22, 30 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Umm... that's not the merger I think should happen. You're assuming I don't know the difference between suspended and dissolved. I do. It's not going to make sense why my proposal was to merge Total suspended solids with TDS meter into Total dissolved solids if you didn't read the articles. It was motivated by a spectrum of article quality, bias, and large de facto and topical overlap, among the articles.(I haven't re-read them; they may have substantial changes, but I doubt it. Looks like I need to visit water quality. ) --50.201.195.170 (talk) 00:26, 1 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Note: I hadn't noticed Klbrain performed a merger when I posted the above comments. Will look at it now. --50.201.195.170 (talk) 00:30, 1 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
