They are fitted to experimental data. Usually standard non-linear least-square fitting methods are employed, with input being a value of index of refraction at about 50-100 different wavelengths, and using multiple samples, to perform simultaneous fitting. Fused Silica coefficients

I think it would be useful to add the coefficients for fused silica, however I'd first like someone to verify the numbers I have

Looks to be correct, I found the same values at https://refractiveindex.info/?shelf=glass&book=fused_silica&page=Malitson and in the source https://doi.org/10.1364/JOSA.55.001205 (no need for full access, the abstract itself references the same values). 81.6.34.246 (talk) 09:02, 7 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Source of the Sellmeier equation

It is stated in the article that the relation is empirical. However, the original Sellmeier's article, as well as, "Fundamentals of Optics" by F.A. Jenkins and H. E. White lead to a conclusion that the result comes from theoretical exploration of light-matter interaction.
