Konishiki is in the wrong place (number 17) isn't he? Someone who knows the correct info about him should correct it.--Sjv27 20:46, 26 Jan 2005 (UTC)

You're probably thinking of the wrong Konishiki. The gigantic Hawaiian of recent years never made it to Yokozuna. The original Konishiki was Yokozuna a hundred years ago - see the article on Konishiki. --Auximines 20:47, 27 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Should mention that these are assumed names, not their original names (at least for Konishiki, I think it's true for all of them.) Kappa 17:47, 27 Oct 2004 (UTC)

merging

[edit]

I put some tags about merging on some articles. I can't believe that many of the yokozuna before wwii will ever have enough sources in english to be made more than one or two lines. I would think it would be better to create one article or a series of articles (such as pre meiji yokozuna, etc.) were we could group information. This is per WP:MM reason #3, text. XinJeisan 16:17, 14 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A lot of the Japanese articles are not all that long either. I also started a discussion at sumo's wikiproject talk page, as well, if other people have some ideas. XinJeisan 17:04, 14 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Even if someone translated the Japanese articles eventually, it is going to take time. If we redirect all the yokozuna stubs to one or two articles for now, we could make an article worth looking at. If anyone finds enough information, all they have to do is take out the redirect (takes five seconds) and add in their info. for a full articles. It's that simple. Nothing is lost. Entries in the combined articles that have substantial info could be linked so a User could see the full article if they want to, and I also think any individual articles should have a link to the merged article, so that people can read more easily about the other yokozuna (which is much faster than following the slow succession box route). I'll put this up on the project page as well. Malnova 22:27, 14 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think that making them all one big article will actually discourage expansion, since it'll look completed. There are many published sources on all of these people, even if most are in Japanese, and in a long enough time frame I'm sure we'll have good articles for all of them (some, like Tanikaze Kajinosuke, are pretty good already, and I certainly didn't have trouble finding at least a few sources for Onogawa Kisaburō when I worked on it a few months back). As such, I don't think merging is a good idea right now. -Hit bull, win steak(Moo!) 03:13, 27 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A number of people have started working on these individual articles and a lot of breadth has been added since talks of merging some of these articles began. I think for now, as expansion seems to be happening at a faster rate than we expected, that the issue of merging articles can be safely ignored for now. Malnova 09:32, 28 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Times won

[edit]

I just added the number of times a wrestler has won Yokozuna, but the sort ascending and descending isn't working properly. Does anybody know why?--Leveni (talk) 09:23, 21 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It looks like you figured out the sorting.
You don't "win" yokozuna so to speak. The very loose translation of "Grand Champion" for yokozuna might cause confusion, top division championships won are only tangently related to yokozuna promotion. I'll edit in a more applicable column heading.
Beyond this, I think there are some issues with adding the number of top divison championships for yokozuna to the list. First of all, until 1909, there was no concept of a championship, and all such "championships" are historically conferred by sumo historians and unrecognized by the Japan Sumo Association. This could be handled by a footnote for those championships (though 2 yokozuna have championships from before and after this period). Secondly, yokozuna after 1958 had six tournaments a year to earn championships, while in previous years they had as little as two which weighs such a ranking heavily in favor of post-1958 yokozuna, and gives a misleading comparison. Thirdly, the List of sumo record holders already has a list for the top 10 or so championship holders. FourTildes (talk) 03:44, 23 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Longest record Yokozuna

[edit]

As it stands Hakuhō Shō would hold this record at 12 years 4 months. I do not know if it would be better to wait and update after he retires or not. Discodecepticon (talk) 20:40, 30 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

This question will be moot in a couple of days, but shouldn't Terunofuji NOT be listed until the Sumo Association makes his promotion official? JRHorse (talk) 17:08, 19 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

He should absolutely not be listed until it is official. Yes, it's a formality but it hasn't happened yet!-- Pawnkingthree (talk) 18:41, 19 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Stables (At the Time of Promotion)

[edit]

Would anyone be opposed to me adding the stable a wrestler was part of at the time of their promotion? This was inspired by a question someone asked on a sumo stream I was on about which stable has produced the most Yokozuna. Google currently has Takasago stable at the first result when people search but the right answer is Dewanoumi.

I am making sure to specify at the time of promotion because some wrestlers have moved around a lot. WaimiriMaina (talk) 10:01, 21 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I wouldn't have any objection. Pawnkingthree (talk) 21:54, 21 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, I will give it until the end of the January tournament to give people more time to respond WaimiriMaina (talk) 07:43, 24 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I don't mind either, in fact it's quite a good idea. Many of our other lists contain stable information (such as List of past sumo wrestlers, List of active sumo wrestlers or List of sumo elders) - OtharLuin (talk) 07:57, 24 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you WaimiriMaina (talk) 15:28, 24 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Help With Notes

[edit]

Hey I would like some help with formatting notes so that I can include notes on the stables at the time of promotion. Would anyone be willing to help? WaimiriMaina (talk) 15:21, 14 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
