Wondering how to edit this U.S. City Entry?
The WikiProject U.S. Cities standards might help.

Anyone know how to fix the formatting problem? --Deville (Talk) 01:39, 16 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Name

[edit]

Most cities and towns have a section on where the name came from and when was it named. This one doesn't and it's especially needed here, as most people see the name as a misspelled phoenix and wonder why. Could someone who knows the etymology of the name write a section about it?? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.205.171.222 (talk) 21:40, 29 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Pronunciation

[edit]

Is the city name pronounced like Fenix or like Phoenix? - Parsa (talk) 18:14, 2 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The pronunciation varies somewhat among the locals. Some pronounce it like Phoenix, while others pronounce both vowels like the i in kid. --TantalumTelluride 01:35, 8 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The name seems unusual enough (ie: why not "Phoenix") that it could use an explanation section if anyone knows the source... — Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.128.46.210 (talk) 15:06, 11 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Corruption

[edit]

Corruption in Phenix City apparently dates back well before the Second World War. During the 1930s, General Patton was in command of a much-expanded Fort Benning, training via the Louisiana Maneuvers for a probable American entry into World War II. Supposedly, so many of his men wound up in the jails of Phenix City-- just across the river-- on dubious charges that he showed up in a tank and threatened to blow the jail unless his men were released... which they were. This story is said by some of the residents to have been at least part of the inspiration for the movie Tank.

All America City Award?

[edit]

Phenix City wins the All America City Award at a time when it was a corrupt place, and a haven for organized crime? Albert Patterson gets killed in 1954 and Phenix wins the award in 1955? Really? How could this possibly be?
