Marino Orlandi (born August 23, 1984) is a fashion designer and entrepreneur known for his dramatic rise and fall in the fashion and sneaker industry. His career has been highlighted by his involvement in the notorious "Ronny Fieg Scandal" and his subsequent self-imposed exile to Italy.

Early Life

[edit]

Marino Orlandi was born in Yonkers, New York, to a family of Italian immigrants. Growing up in a household that valued craftsmanship, Orlandi developed an early love for leather goods and fashion. He spent his youth collecting rare sneakers and developed a reputation in his local community as a sneaker aficionado.

College Years

[edit]

Orlandi attended the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York City, where he initially studied fashion design. During his time at FIT, Orlandi became more interested in the booming streetwear and sneaker culture. He began working with up-and-coming designers, setting the stage for his future success. It was during these years that he famously said, "Sneakers are art; they just happen to be worn on your feet."

The Ronny Fieg Scandal

[edit]

In 2011, Orlandi found himself embroiled in what would become known as the "Ronny Fieg Scandal." Allegations surfaced that Orlandi had "borrowed" a concept from famed sneaker designer Ronny Fieg without proper credit. The sneaker community quickly turned against Orlandi, and despite his claims of innocence, his reputation took a hit. Memes like "Marino Stole My Sneaks" spread across the internet, leading to a rapid downfall in his career.

Exile to Italy

[edit]

Following the scandal, Orlandi fled to Italy in 2012, seeking solace in his ancestral homeland. He reconnected with his Italian roots and began designing high-end leather goods, distancing himself from the sneaker world that had once embraced him. Since his exile, Orlandi has quietly built a niche brand known for artisanal craftsmanship, but he has yet to return to the global spotlight.
