I reckon programming optimization and mathematical optimization are such different topics they deserve different entries. What do others think? --Robert Merkel

My view is that generally, optimization refers to mathematical optimization. In addition, mathematical optimization is a very wide topic in operations research, much wider than programming optimization. Further, programming optimization can be viewed as a special case of mathematical optimization. Therefore, my suggestion is that programming optimization would be handled under Programming optimization and Optimization would refer to mathematical optimization (with a 'see also' link to programming optmization). Comments? --User:Tbackstr

I would agree; in CS most people talk about an optimizing x, e.g. an optimizing compiler. I've started a little blurb on convex optimization on this page --User:Iwnbap

It looks like the article "Mathematical programming" linked from here covers all of mathematical optimization. Should that text be moved here, or what?

I've begun a refactor unifying the two entries; as far as I can tell "optimization" is proably the correct place for this again, as I've seen "optimization" used a great deal for mathematical optimization/programming in general. -- User:Iwnbap

I agree; "mathematical programming" is an older term that's nowadays misleading, since there are of course many problems involving programming and mathematics which have nothing to do with optimization. 63.224.6.83

[edit]

Would it be reasonable to include process optimization and operations research in the disambiguation links? There's a lot of pages dealing with finding optimal solutions to business/engineering problems, which isn't exactly the same as optimization (mathematics). -- Hongooi 13:50, 14 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
