What else can be written about this subject? This smells like a dictionary definition to me and Wikipedia is not a dictionary. You might be interested in our sister project Wiktionary. --mav

Is this better? I have added some history and a few related links. I note that the term Rotary dial also exists, but is probably best left as a separate term. kiwiinapanic 23:18 Dec 30, 2002 (UTC)

It still looks messy but it is better. Isn't the history more about key pads though? --mav
I agree; it really seems like the history should be moved to articles about telephones, and the rest turned into a disambiguation page. Especially since I'm thinking about writing an article about Dial Corp :) Iroll 21:46, 11 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Though "dialling" and "dialled" have a double L here (in th UK), the word "dial" (as in "I dial" or "he dials") does not, but the article sort of implies that it does.

I don't understand why that's even in the article. It has virtually nothing to do with the article's subject. -04:04, Feb 15, 2005 (UTC)

The word "dial"

[edit]

"Dial" is still commonly used as a verb (e.g. "Let's dial out for pizza") even though dial telephones are largely obsolete. Also "speed dial" and "dial-up" generally don't involve actual "dials". There is a grammatical term for this kind of word, but now I can't remember it. Might be worth mentioning in the article. -- Gyrofrog (talk) 20:39, 12 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Same premise, different dial: "Keep it tuned to 97.1 on your FM dial". Many or most radio tuners now have button controls instead of a tuning knob or "dial," but the word persists. -- Gyrofrog (talk) 20:44, 12 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes I agree, it should be mentioned in the article. I was just thinking about that and came here to see if it had already been added to such an article. I did add it to the website http://obsoleteskills.com/Skills/DialingARotaryPhone -- Suso (talk) 20:50, 20 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Voice dial

[edit]

I would add more information about voice dial. And about automatic dial (i.e. after an accident by the car). --Mac (talk) 15:13, 1 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
