Indian River State College (IRSC) is a public college located in Fort Pierce, Florida. It is a member institution of the Florida College System.
In addition to its main campus, IRSC operates four regional campuses in Okeechobee, Port St. Lucie, Stuart, and Vero Beach, serving students across the Treasure Coast region of Florida.
History
[edit]IRSC was established in 1959 as Indian River Junior College. In 1963, the college relocated to its current campus following a donation from the city. The institution was renamed Indian River Community College in 1970.
On July 1, 2008, the college changed its name to "Indian River State College" to reflect its status as a four-year institution.[4] In 2020, the main campus was renamed "Massey Campus" in honor of Edwin R. Massey, who retired as president of the college.[5]
Academics
[edit]IRSC offers both associate and bachelor's degree programs in subject areas such as middle- and secondary-school teacher education in math and science, exceptional student education, nursing, organizational management, public-safety administration, and healthcare management. It is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. It provides various educational programs including technical certificates, applied technology diplomas, an adult high school program, and dual enrollment options. The college operates the Clark Advanced Learning Center in partnership with the Martin County School District.
In 2019, IRSC, alongside Miami Dade College, won the Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence, awarded by the Aspen Institute.[6][7] In 2022, it introduced the "Promise Program" to offer tuition-free associate degrees to local high school graduates, boosting freshman enrollment.[8][9]
Athletics
[edit]The college’s athletic teams, known as the Pioneers, compete in the Southern Conference of the Florida State College Activities Association. IRSC is acclaimed for its swimming and diving programs, with the men's team holding 48 consecutive NJCAA championships and the women’s team 41, marking the longest unbroken U.S. collegiate championship streak in any sport.[10]
Media
[edit]IRSC owns and operates three radio stations: WQCP, an urban adult contemporary radio station; WQJS, a radio station broadcasting classical music; and WQCS, the primary NPR affiliate serving the Treasure Coast region of Florida.
