In one or two words, what was Carloman? Leader? Nobleman? King? What was his one distinguishing feature that warrants inclusion here?

Lets see -- the Concilium he called with Boniface was important -- the foundation of Fulda was pretty major...he's not all that well-known, but he did do things that had a lasting effect. However, since most of the things he did that were important happened east of the Rhein-Main, there has been little written about him in English until recently. HK

[edit]

Carloman "gave up" his mayoralty to his son before leaving for Rome, but there is no indication he intended to give up public life for the cloister. Fouracre suggests that his "choice" was "influenced" by a papacy amenable to the ambitious Pepin's interests. Carloman's raising Childeric to the throne may have been an attempt to check Pepin's ambitions: the two brothers were not, by all indications, on good terms from the get-go. Notice, too, how Pepin imprisoned an innocent monk just calling for peace in 753 and kept him in confinement until his death! Srnec (talk) 05:40, 24 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
